There's a conversation happening in legal and compliance departments right now that most technology teams are not part of. It goes something like this: "We have logs of all our AI usage." A log is a record that something happened. What a Log Actually Is
When your engineers say "we log everything," they mean your systems write records to a database, a file, or a log aggregation platform. Those records contain timestamps, user IDs, action types, and perhaps the content of AI interactions. This sounds comprehensive. It isn't.
Logs are mutable. A database administrator can change them. A system breach can corrupt them. A developer can write a script that modifies timestamps. Consider the following scenario, which is not hypothetical: a financial advisor uses an AI system to draft client recommendations. The AI system logs every interaction. Six months later, a client claims the recommendations were inappropriate. The firm produces its logs. The client's attorney asks a simple question: can you prove these logs haven't been modified since the recommendations were issued?
If the answer is no — and for most AI logging systems, it is — the logs become far less useful as a defense. They may even become a liability, because a mutable log that shows what the firm wants it to show is exactly what a sophisticated opposing party will argue it is.

What matters is that the signing happens at the moment of the event — not retroactively. A signature computed on yesterday's log entry is not a proof of what happened yesterday.
